FAQ: The Basics
This page answers some of the basic questions about the products that we offer such as 'What is web hosting?' You can use the links on the right to jump directly to a question that interests you.
What is web hosting?
If your every day job doesn't revolve around computers, you may be wondering exactly what web hosting is and why do you need it?
Web hosting is simply the storage and displaying of web pages (part of a web site). This is where you store the web site after creating it so that people around the world can access it.
What are domain names?
In contrast, domain names are just the address that allows your visitors to access your website. For example one of our domains names is ennoverse.com which is setup to point to our web site.
These can be purchased separately from web hosting accounts. With our easy ordering process, when you buy a domain name with web hosting we will handle all the technical details of linking this to your Ennoverse web hosting pacakge.
What does shared web hosting mean?
In order to provide the most efficient and cost effective service to the majority of our customers, we provide a comprehensive range of shared web hosting packages.
This means the website shares physical resources (servers) with other websites. This is effective as the vast majority of web sites do not need the expense and complexity of dedicated hardware. With our use of CPanel for shared hosting packages it couldn't be easier to manage and control your web hosting account.
What is a database?
A database is a system used to store information in a structured way. In the context of web hosting it is often used by web applications like blogs and content management systems.
All of our shared hosting packages from E200 and upwards have database capability, which allows you to use all of the software that is provided in Fantastico within CPanel.
What are SSL certificates?
Web sites often need a secure way to communicate sensitive information between their visitors and the web servers. In order to do this we use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) (websites with https:// in front of their domain name are using this) and SSL certificates provide the means to verify the authenticity of the server to its visitors.
This is required for credit card and financial transactions but may also be used to secure any information deemed as sensitive. With SSL in place no one can eavesdrop on this communication.
What are IP addresses?
IP (Internet Protocol) addresses can be thought of as the phone numbers of the Internet. Every system in order to communicate must have its own address. This web server and your computer each have their own address which they use to talk to each other. Since these are not easy to remember we use domain names to contact web sites, just like you might use a phonebook to call someone rather than remember their number.
